The leaders discussed the activities of the Coalition of the Willing, as well as steps to facilitate any peace agreement that will ensure lasting peace.
The conversation took place after negotiations in Miami between the Ukrainian, American and European delegations, as well as the American and Russian contact groups to end the war. The head of the Ukrainian delegation, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Rustem Umerov, as well as Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff commented on the results of the meetings in the same way: they called the meeting in the US-Ukraine format constructive.
In addition, Starmer and Trump discussed the appointment of Christian Turner as British ambassador to the United States after the dismissal of predecessor Peter Mandelsohn due to ties to American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of child sexual abuse.
Context
The Ukrainian and US delegations have already held a number of rounds of negotiations on a “peace plan” for resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war. In parallel, the American side is discussing the same issue with the Russian Federation.
On December 16, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine is counting on five documents to end the war, including security guarantees for Ukraine.
Earlier, the media (in particular, Bloomberg, citing Finnish President Alexander Stubb) wrote that at peace negotiations in Ukraine three documents are being discussed: a 20-point framework, on security guarantees for Ukraine, and on the restoration of Ukraine.
