Authorities in Caracas said Iran offered them its cooperation “in all fields” to fight US “piracy and international terrorism” after Washington seized a second oil tanker off Venezuela.
However, Tehran did not mention any concrete measures in a report of the content of the Saturday telephone conversation between the heads of the two diplomats, write the France Presse and Agerpres agencies.
Iran is one of the main allies of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who denounces a plot aimed at ousting Washington.
The United States has deployed a large military fleet in the Caribbean to conduct operations against drug trafficking. Since the beginning of the month, several tankers transporting Venezuelan crude oil have been seized as part of a “total blockade” decreed by President Donald Trump.
“Venezuela is completely surrounded.” What follows after the “total blockade” imposed on Venezuela by Trump, with “the largest army assembled in the history of South America”
The conversation with the head of Iranian diplomacy referred to “recent events in the Caribbean, especially threats, acts of piracy by the US and the theft of ships carrying Venezuelan oil,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto, quoted in a statement.
“Venezuela received a show of total solidarity from the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as its offer of cooperation in all fields to fight against piracy and international terrorism that the US is trying to impose by force,” he emphasized, after a discussion with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.
For its part, Tehran “underlined the determination of the leaders of the two countries to strengthen and develop their relations”, stated the Iranian diplomacy in a statement, which however did not use the terms “piracy” and “international terrorism”.
The Iranian account of the conversation, published on Sunday, emphasized Iran's “solidarity” and “support for the people and elected government of Venezuela” in the face of an “obvious threat to peace and stability in the region,” without citing concrete measures.
The two countries signed a cooperation agreement valid for 20 years in 2022.
Iran has already helped Venezuela by supplying fuel, food and medicine.
China and Russia, other countries allied to Venezuela, have also expressed their solidarity with President Maduro in the context of the US military deployment.
The previous known call between the heads of diplomacy of Venezuela and Iran dates from the end of November.
Putin called Maduro and assured him of Russia's support, in the context of tensions between Venezuela and the USA
