The president of USR, Dominic Fritz, announced that he will convene a meeting of the National Political Committee for Friday where the nomination for the position of Minister of Defense, currently held by Radu Miruță as interim, will be voted on, after the resignation of Ionuț Moșteanu amid the scandal related to his studies.

Fritz said, on Wednesday evening, on Antena 3, that the man nominated by the USR for Defense will be a “qualified one who knows the field”.

“Romania needs a Minister of Defense. Tomorrow (…) morning I will convene a political committee for the day after tomorrow, that is, Friday, and on Friday we will vote on my proposal (…). It will be a qualified man, who knows the field,” said the USR leader.

Asked if a man with experience in the field of defense will be proposed, Dominic Fritz avoided giving a direct answer: “We will find a man with political weight and a man who knows what he is talking about, a man who knows the SAFE program, who knows how we have to manage in the coming years these more than 16 billion euros with which we can endow our army – and this money is needed, and someone competent is needed to manage this money.”

Miruta: “A party that only brings in people from outside has no resources”

Also on Wednesday evening, on B1 TV, the interim Minister of Defense said for his part that the new holder of the position will be installed “by the end of this week”.

“We are a serious party, there is a discussion in the coming days, we respect the procedures. A National Political Committee must be convened, i.e. the leaders from the counties, branches, parliamentarians, to decide the person in question”, declared Radu Miruță.

Asked if it will be a person from the USR, he answered: “A party that only brings people from outside is a party that has no resources. The party that is parliamentary and serious must have one, two, three resources for each ministry, from my point of view.”
