In mid-December, houseplants are especially vulnerable. Ficus benjamina, which was lush in the summer, is now losing its leaves, looks sparse, and the shoots seem lifeless. This is not a disease, but stress from dry air, lack of light and soil depleted over the summer. But there is an easy way to restore its strength and it sits in the trash can after breakfast.
Even in the darkest month, a ficus can begin to grow new leaves if you give it what it lacks most – potassium and organic matter. The ideal source is banana peels.
In order for the ficus to grow well and not shed its leaves, it needs three conditions:
- Scattered light
- Watering only after the top layer of soil has dried,
- Fertilizing without nitrogen, but with potassium.
Experienced housewives advise using an infusion of banana peels in December. It gently nourishes the roots, strengthens cell walls and stimulates the awakening of dormant buds without the risk of burns.
How to cook:
- Collect the peels of 2-3 bananas.
- Rinse well to remove any remaining sweetness.
- Pour 1 liter of warm water, cover and leave for 24 hours at room temperature.
- Strain and pour 100–150 ml per medium pot at the root of the ficus.
- Repeat every 3-4 weeks until the end of February.
After just 10–14 days, you will notice: the falling of leaves slows down, the tops become dense, and the buds swell on seemingly “dry” branches.
Proper support during this period will help the plant not only survive the winter, but also emerge from it with a reserve of strength for vigorous growth in the spring.
Question and answer:
Can I use fresh banana peels without steeping?
No. Fresh peels will begin to rot in the soil and attract midges. Be sure to use infusion or dried crumbs.
Will the method work for other plants?
Yes, for monstera, dracaena, spathiphyllum. But not for cacti and succulents: they do not need potassium in liquid form.
What to do if the ficus has already lost half of its leaves?
Do not replant or prune. Just start watering with infusion and remove it from the battery. New leaves will appear in the spring, but nutrition now is key to their quality.
