“The space around the church has a sacred character.” A fight over the carousel on Krupówki

The city of Zakopane opposed the commercial development of the square in front of the sanctuary of the Holy Family at Krupówki, where a Christmas carousel and entertainment devices were placed. The area is located within the borders of a cultural park.

In recent days, a carousel, a Christmas tree and a row of festively decorated stands have been erected at the historic temple on Krupówki. According to PAP's findings, the area where the installations were installed was leased from the parish priest.. The parish and the Press Office of the Archdiocese of Krakow have not yet responded to PAP's questions.

As the city authorities emphasized in their position on this matter sent to PAP, this area is within the boundaries of the Krupówki Cultural Park and surrounded by a monument entered in the register of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The current resolution prohibits commercial, service and entertainment activities outside the premises.

“The space around the church has a sacred, historical and representative character. Using it for commercial purposes is contrary to the provisions of the local development plan, which requires the preservation of functions related to religious worship and only allows for land development consistent with such purpose,” says the city office.

The office added that so far no application in this regard has been received from the area manager, i.e. the parish. At the same time, he assured that he was ready to cooperate in organizing events corresponding to the sacred and historic character of the place.

“Due to our attachment to faith and tradition, we express particular concern for sacred and historic space, which should not be transformed into an area for commercial entertainment activities” – emphasized the office. (PAP)
