Hungary was eliminated from the Women's Handball World Championship, after a 5-goal loss to the Netherlands: 28-23. At the end of the game, several players as well as the president of the Hungarian Handball Federation criticized the refereeing in Rotterdam.

Appearing in the quarter-finals of the World Championship for the first time in 12 years, Hungary was hoping for a big result against the Netherlands, a national team that had no syncopation in the first two groups of this tournament.

Petra Simon: “There were always decisions that we looked at without understanding”

However, motivated by the good game against Denmark, the Hungarians wanted to produce a surprise and eliminate one of the two hosts of the World Championship. The opposing team, however, proved to be too strong.

Backed by nearly 9,000 supporters, Holland took the lead within the first 10 minutes and controlled the game until the end, benefiting from an excellent performance in goal by Yara Ten Holte and various attacking weapons. Final score: 28-23.

After the end of the game, the refereeing of the Danes Mads Hansen and Jesper Madsen was criticized by the Hungarians. The tone was set by Katrin Klujber, Hungary's captainwhich was eliminated in the second half, after a hard foul on the counterattack.

“Obviously, there was no intent involved. I couldn't stop, but if we had a normal referee, they would have gone back and looked at the situation. Maybe I was targeted, I don't know, maybe the whole Hungary team [a fost vizată]. I didn't protest because it would have been for nothing. I had no intention at all,” explained Klujber, quoted by nemzetisport.hu.

“The biggest problem wasn't getting rid of Katrin, but the fact that every time we fought and felt like we could come back, we had the impression that we couldn't win today, because there were always decisions that we looked at without understanding. I'm sorry that it happened like this,” the young woman added Peter Simonauthor of 3 goals.

The President of the Hungarian Handball Federation: “I was very nervous on the refereeing”

Petra ToviziHungary's pivot, did not explicitly criticize the refereeing, but preferred to talk about her and her teammates' game:

Many things influenced the match, but I would like us to focus on ourselves first. We are disappointed because the Dutch national team didn't show anything we didn't know or something special. We made a lot of mistakes in attack in the first half. The offense didn't work and they took advantage of our mistakes very well and scored easy goals. It's very painful now.”

The porter did the same Kinga Janurik.

“Everyone is crying. We never discuss the refereeing, we shouldn't, but it was very difficult on the ground in Holland. We fought, everyone who came off the bench tried to bring strength. I'm proud of the team, I'm sorry we didn't qualify in the box,” said the 34-year-old goalkeeper.

Ferenc Ilyesthe president of the Hungarian Handball Federation, expressed his displeasure with the manner of refereeing, but also acknowledged his team's mistakes.

“I think we didn't play a good match. During the game, I was very nervous on the referee, but in the end we made a lot of mistakes, which led us to this result“, said the former handball player.

“I'm sorry we didn't play better to really see how good the Dutch team is. We couldn't give our best so the result is not very realistic,” added Ilyes.

I'm proud of the girls. I played in the World Championship and I think I did everything I could. We are where we are. Obviously, I think we can still improve and we will. But perhaps the most important thing is that our heart was always there
