The State Hermitage Museum opened the exhibition “The Art of Portrait. Personality and Epoch”, dedicated to the world history of portraiture.

The exhibition was created with the support of VTB within the framework of the bank’s “Cultural Country” program and brings together more than 750 works covering four thousand years – from the 20th century BC to the 21st century AD.

The exhibition offers a broad look at the development of the portrait genre: from its ancient forms to the latest artistic solutions. It presents the best examples of portrait art, both known to a wide audience and those exhibited for the first time. In one space, works are collected – symbols of different eras: the ancient Egyptian statue of Pharaoh Amenemhat III, the bust of the Roman Emperor Philip the Arab, the Gonzaga cameo, the portrait of Fath Ali Shah, Renaissance medals, etc.

The exhibition includes works by Western European and Russian artists, including Pietro Perugino, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Anthony Van Dyck, Rembrandt Harmens van Rijn, Diego Velazquez, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Nikolai Ge, Ivan Kramskoy, Valentin Serov. A modern view of the genre is reflected in the works of Francis Bacon, Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe, Andy Warhol, Bill Viola, photographers Annie Leibovitz and Steve McCari.

“This is not the first exhibition for VTB dedicated to the history of portraiture. Together with the Russian Museum in November, we presented the national portrait gallery – an exhibition that allows you to see the history of Russia through the images of its outstanding personalities. For the bank, supporting such fundamental exhibitions that reveal the logic of the development of art is participation in the formation of the cultural environment and the development of scientific knowledge. It is important for us to promote projects that help world culture become more open and accessible to the general public,” said Natalya Kochneva, Senior Vice President of VTB.

Exhibition “The Art of Portrait. Personality and Epoch” runs from December 9, 2025 to March 29, 2026.

Social responsibility has been one of the important areas of VTB’s work for many years. As part of its Cultural Country program for the preservation and development of Russia's heritage, the bank actively cooperates with many key institutions, supporting their projects. VTB implements its own initiatives in the field of art to preserve and enrich culture.
