Venezuelan dissident Maria Corina Machado, who lives in hiding in her country, has confirmed that she will travel to Oslo to receive her Nobel Peace Prize, the director of the Nobel Institute told AFP on Saturday.
“I have been in touch with Ms. Machado tonight and she has confirmed that she will be in Oslo for the ceremony,” Kristian Berg Harpviken said.
“Given the security situation, we cannot say more about the date and how it will come,” he added in a message to France Presse.
The information comes as there were big questions about the possibility that this 58-year-old opponent will participate in the Nobel Prize awarding ceremony on December 10 in the capital of Norway.
In November, Venezuela's attorney general said Machado would be considered a “fugitive” if she left the country to receive her award.
This opponent, who dedicated the Nobel to the Venezuelan people and Donald Trump, received the prize on October 10 for her fight in favor of a democratic transition in Venezuela.
She was prevented from running in the 2024 presidential election, at the end of which incumbent President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner, despite protests from the opposition.
The United States and much of the international community did not recognize this outcome.
