Investigators were on the trail of the couple after a report from the bank regarding cash deposits into several accounts. The bank suspected money laundering.

It is believed that a city employee illegally appropriated coins from parking meters. He then deposited them into accounts to which his wife had access. It is estimated that the city of Kempten suffered losses in excess of one million euros as a result of these actions.

Kempten Mayor Thomas Kiechle said he was “stunned and concerned” by the reports. As part of the investigation, the services searched city institutions. (PAP)
