The Americans are a difficult ally, but only they are able to stop Russia, said PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński on Friday in Lublin. He criticized the European Union, which in his opinion breaks the law, is a “carrier of imperial ambitions” of several countries and imposes ideology.
On Friday, Kaczyński was a guest of the ECR Youth Congress 2025; took part in the panel “Poland's future in Europe”.
When asked about his assessment of Donald Trump's presidency, the PiS president said that the Americans, and not only under President Trump, “are a very difficult ally, but we absolutely need them.” – This is currently the only country, maybe apart from China, that is able to influence and deter Russia. The Russians really care about this country, they know that it is stronger than them, said Kaczyński.
Therefore, in his opinion, the United States is the main guarantor of the security of all Europe, and “certainly of the recovered Europe to which we belong.”. In Kaczyński's opinion, among others, among European politicians, “stories that this security can be secured in a different way are only stories, they are dreams.”
According to Kaczyński, the current problem of the European Union is “strategic independence”. As he explained, it could be obtained if the EU built an army at least comparable to the US army, but it would have to be an “army of a very integrated alliance” or a common army. – And here is the problem of the complete reconstruction of the European Union, because in its current shape it cannot have such an army – he added.
In the opinion of the PiS leader, “the concept of an armed peace with the United States at the center” would be very attractive. and countries united for a common purpose, but sovereign, “which no one dictates what to do in their internal affairs.” – It could no longer be just an Atlantic agreement, it had to be some new agreement – he emphasized.
Kaczyński assessed that Poland was losing its sovereignty in the EU. He pointed to the recent CJEU judgment regarding the recognition of same-sex marriages concluded in another EU country. – If (the CJEU-PAP judgment) is honored, Poles will be able to go to other countries, enter into such a marriage there, and it will have to be treated here as a marriage, contrary to the constitution. In addition, there are regulations regarding the adoption of children, he noted. According to him, this is a manifestation of Poland's loss of sovereignty in the areas relating to customs, family and marriage.
The PiS president emphasized that mechanisms of institutionalized cooperation between democratic European states are needed, but their sovereignty is necessary for the security of these states.
Such a Union has no future…
– Today the EU does not follow these rules, it simply breaks the law. (…) In my opinion, such a European Union has no future, because at some point it will lead to a very serious crisis and will cause many serious harm to European societies. Because apart from being a carrier of imperial ambitions, primarily of Germany, and to some extent also of France, it is also a carrier of a certain type of ideology, it is a mechanism that imposes this ideology – added the politician.
When asked about the possibility of Poland's close cooperation with China and maintaining neutrality in a potential conflict between the US and China, the PiS president assessed it negatively. In his opinion, President Donald Trump's visits to Beijing “relieve our hands a bit” and mean that there is “a desire for some pacification of relations.”
– This match will probably happen. We are far away, but that doesn't mean that this game won't affect us in some way, said Kaczyński. He added that China is a “huge power” and a “completely totalitarian” state.
In his opinion, basing “Polish independence policy” on “some agreements with the Chinese” is – in the context of the threat from Russia – in the current reality “dreams that have no real basis”.
According to Kaczyński, China's support is important for Russia in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. – I also think that the Russians had to get China's consent for this war – he said.
At the end of the meeting, the PiS president received the “Sigma 2025” award from the organizers. The word “sigma” in youth slang means a successful, self-confident, outstanding person who can be admired, but also, among others, “lone wolf”.
ECR Youth Congress 2025 is held in Lublin for the second time, under the slogan “Strong Poland. The future is within us”. The Congress was initiated by the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR/ECR) as a space for dialogue for conservative youth.
