In Krasnoyarsk, doctors from the Siberian Scientific and Clinical Center of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia successfully performed a second kidney transplantation on a woman.

The center’s press service said that Tuva resident Chayana Oorzhak, who is raising 5 children, has long suffered from chronic kidney disease. In 2019, she underwent her first kidney transplant, stabilizing her condition. But in 2022, the organ had to be removed due to a complication after suffering from Covid and missing maintenance therapy because of this.

The woman returned to the doctors and was put on the waiting list. The patient’s family was told about the possibility of related donation, and her older brother agreed to donate his organ to her.

“My brother came, expressed a desire to become a donor, signed a consent that he wants to become a donor for his sister, we examined him, and no contraindications for transplantation were identified,” nephrologist Rimma Nagovitsyna.

The donor organ started working right on the operating table. The transplant operation was successful.

“Due to the fact that it was a related transplant, the kidney collection and transplantation took place simultaneously. This made it possible to minimize cold or warm ischemia (a condition in which the blood supply to an organ or tissue area is disrupted, which leads to a lack of oxygen and nutrients). The operation itself lasted three hours. The kidney was immediately connected to the bloodstream, and it started working,” said surgeon Evgeny Kartashkov.

The patient's condition after repeated kidney transplantation is stable, the function of the transplanted organ is satisfactory. After discharge, the woman continues outpatient observation at her place of residence.

“I only have one older brother. He immediately agreed. I am very grateful to him. He is the savior of my life! — Chayana Oorzhak shared.

Transplantologists note that kidney transplants are performed regularly, but related donation today is classified as a rare practice that requires special preparation and coordination.
