Danylo Yavhusishyn (21), with the stage name Aonishiki, became the first Ukrainian sumo wrestler to win a major competition in Japan's sacred sport.
Danylo Yavhusishyn has a special life story. Born in the center of Ukraine, in the Vinnytsia region, he started sumo at the age of 7. A decade later he was becoming national champion. Just before he came of age, his life took on a different meaning.
He had to flee his home because of Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukrainian territory. He took refuge in Japan. Without knowing the language, he adapted quickly thanks to the sport he loved.

Aonishiki debuted in professional sumo competitions in July 2023. Since the introduction of the current format in 1958, the Ukrainian has established the fifth-fastest rise to the top division, according to the Japan Times.
Last weekend, Aonishiki won the Kyushu Grand Sumo. It was only the 14th tournament in which he started. He defeated Mongolian yokozuna Hoshoryu in the final.
Honestly, I dreamed of winning this tournament, but I didn't think it was possible. I am very happy! I received many congratulatory messages, I still haven't had time to answer them all. I will take my time

He defeated a legend
Sugarragchaa Byambasuren (Hoshoryu), sumo wrestler from Mongolia, became the 74th yokozuna in January this year, a name synonymous with the title of grand champion. A special ceremony was held in Tokyo in front of over 3,500 people.

Yokozuna is the highest level of recognition a sumo athlete can receive. Sports performances are not enough for this honor. These must be doubled by good conduct in everyday life, then the merits are approved by a higher commission.
