The provisions of the Donald Trump administration's peace plan look as if they were dictated by Vladimir Putin and de facto mean Ukraine's capitulation, Eugene Vindman, a Ukrainian-born Democratic congressman, told PAP. The politician assessed the proposal of American security guarantees as incredible.

“Conditions dictated by Putin”

– It simply looks as if the terms of this agreement were dictated by Vladimir Putin to Donald Trump – Vindman said in an interview with PAP. – The fact that we are now practically ordering the Ukrainians to surrender is unacceptable – he added.

The Kiev-born politician pointed out that the plan involves giving Russia territories it has not conquered, which he considers “absolutely unacceptable.” When asked about the proposal of security guarantees for Ukraine from the US, NATO and the European Union revealed on Friday, “modeled on Article 5.” North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Vindman stated that it is far from ironclad guarantees, which, combined with the proposed limits on the strength of the Ukrainian army, is a recipe for another invasion.

A recipe for another invasion

– Any guarantees must be absolutely ironclad. Without such guarantees, Russia will only use this as an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen its forces and attack again in a few years, the politician argued. – And then we will have Russia directly threatening NATO's eastern flank – he added. He also emphasized that the best guarantee of security for Ukraine is a strong army.

The specter of Munich 1938

The Democratic politician was not the only congressman who condemned the Trump administration's proposal. Many ruling party deputies were also critical of it. Congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska said the proposal was reminiscent of the Munich Agreement of 1938, when Western countries forced Czechoslovakia to hand over the Sudetenland to Germany. Senator Lindsey Graham, in turn, said the war must end with negotiations whose “honorable and fair outcome would prevent a third invasion and discourage other aggressive actions around the world.”

“Such an outcome can only be achieved through negotiations involving both sides – especially Ukraine, a victim of Russian aggression – and our European allies,” Graham added.

Republicans: “Russian propaganda”

On Friday, another Republican known for supporting Ukraine, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, also joined the group.

“This Russian propaganda should be rejected and ignored because of its frivolous nonsense. What is needed at this moment is peace through force, not concessions,” the politician wrote on the X platform.
