Brussels airport announced on Wednesday that all flights scheduled to take off on November 26 have been canceled due to the participation of some of its security and handling employees in a national strike, Reuters notes.
The airport said some flights due to land on the same day could also be canceled and public transport to and from the airport could be affected by the strike.
The measure aims to “ensure the safety of passengers and staff and avoid excessive queues”, the airport operator also reported, according to Belgium's national press agency.
Union actions are scheduled nationwide on November 24, 25 and 26. The strike on Monday, November 24, will target the railway sector, and on Tuesday, November 25, public services will be affected. The private sector will go on a general strike on Wednesday 26 November. Brussels Airport does not expect operational disruptions during the first two days.
The three-day rally comes ahead of federal budget negotiations. Belgium is facing a deficit of 26 billion euros, which could reach 39 billion in the next four years if current policies remain unchanged, the aforementioned source notes.
Unions say the budget should reduce social inequality, not put more pressure on low- and middle-income households.
