Marcel Ciolacu, serial attacks in Bolojan: “He wants to show that he is the savior of mankind”. The former prime minister threatens to vote a motion of no confidence

Former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu harshly criticized his successor in the position at the Victoria Palace, Ilie Bolojan, whom he said poses as the “savior of mankind”, but does not come with economic recovery measures. In the absence of these measures, Ciolacu said, on Romania TV, that he would vote on a possible motion of censure, a topic he discussed with members of the PSD leadership.

“A man wants to show that he is the savior of mankind. That man, with this attitude, that nothing works, alienates investors, increases the interest rates himself. When you say: Sir, Romania is unable to pay, naturally, I who lend you money watch TV, well, if the prime minister of the country speaks, it means that it is so! Naturally, I charge you a higher interest rate. But look at the public data at the Ministry of Finance: how would you borrowed, with what interest?” said Marcel Ciolacu, quoted by News.ro.

Bolojan, “a messianic attitude”

Ciolacu said Ilie Bolojan turned a budget crisis into an economic crisis, with the former PSD prime minister claiming that exceeding the 3% deficit limit can be found in many governments that resorted to loans for major development projects of their countries.

“They turned a deficit problem – it's a deficit problem, which you negotiate with the Commission, as I negotiated for seven years, at a certain bearable pace to reduce it – they turned it into an economic crisis. With all the announcements, we're talking about layoffs”, stated Ciolacu.

He labeled as “a mess” the claims about the risk of non-payment of salaries and pensions, which were meant to hide the lack of an economic development plan.

“Maybe this is politics too, we don't have to develop. At the moment we continue this messianic attitude. Wait, another news came out! Always, everything is a manipulation, from my point of view, taking into account experience. It also appeared, after the one with the inability to pay, now there is no money for pensions and salaries. How can there not be money for pensions and salaries? That they are budgeted. Where did you get this mess? When Romania had no money for pensions and salaries ever?”, commented Ciolacu.

The former head of the Government said that, if package 3 of measures will not be accompanied by an economic recovery program, he is considering voting for a possible motion of censure directed against the Bolojan cabinet.

“It can't be done anymore! If it comes without economic measures, I'm telling you, for the first time, I'm going to vote for the motion. If it comes again, if it forces again… I'll vote for the motion on sight”, said Marcel Ciolacu.

“I don't speak for myself”

Asked if this is just his position or if there is a current in the PSD that thinks the same way and would support voting for a motion of censure, the former prime minister replied that he would not have made such a statement without consulting with his PSD colleagues and the current leadership of the party.

“Remember Mrs. Olguţa Vasilescu's speech at the Congress. It is no longer possible, it is no longer possible for you to order and order only aberrations, only things that lead Romania to the head, not save Romania, and not take into account all the partners in the coalition! This is not possible anymore! I am not speaking on my own, it is the attribute of the new party leadership, I spoke with my colleagues, otherwise I would not have been allowed to speak to you, no I never spoke over the new leadership”, added the former president of the PSD.

References like the Bogos scandal

At the same time, Marcel Ciolacu also referred to the meeting that Ilie Bolojan had with the businessman Fănel Bogos, who arrived at the Victoria Palace accompanying Mihai Barbu, the former leader of PNL Vaslui.

“The party treasurer comes with one who promised a bribe of 1.5 million to the Prime Minister of Romania. The Prime Minister says: Sir, I listened to him, he was beating the fields, I didn't get any… In the meantime, we find out that the Control Body was sent. So, that audience had effects, that meeting had legal effects. So, an administrative gear was set in motion following an act of corruption. I want to do an exercise in imagination, how much the world was in Piaţa Victoriei if Ciolacu was doing something like that?”, commented Ciolacu.

He said that, during the time when he was prime minister, there were clear procedures regarding the meetings he had with party leaders from the territory, especially if they came accompanied by third parties: “The chief of staff took all the details, got information and said: it is appropriate, it is not appropriate. Naturally, it is a filter.”

On September 23, 2025, in the office at the Victoria Palace, the prime minister received Mihai Barbu, the leader of the PNL Vaslui branch, and the businessman Fanel Bogos.

Considered one of the main players on the poultry market in Romania, Fănel Bogos was remanded in custody in the case in which he is accused by the National Anticorruption Directorate of “relying on influence networks” to change the management of DSVSA Vaslui.

The transcripts in the DNA file claim, however, that Bogos would have paid 1.5 million euros to obtain the audience, the purpose of which would have been to change the management of the sanitary-veterinary control institution in Vaslui and protect an important business in the poultry sector.
