The opposition mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, was detained on suspicion of corruption. The authorities banned any events in the city until March 23 and limited access to social networks.
According to local media, searches were carried out in the mayor's house. Imamoglu and about 100 other people are suspected of bribery, fraud and bribery, as well as illegal tenders in municipalities. According to investigators, Imamoglu and several businessmen received illegal profits, laundered money and transferred funds to a secret account.
In Istanbul, rallies and demonstrations were banned for 4 days for the sake of public order, plus access to X, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok was limited.
Ekrem Imamoglu has served as Mayor of Istanbul since June 2019. He was called the main opponent of the current Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan if he is re-nominated for the post.
