The Norwegian Martin Odegaard (27 years old), the captain of Arsenal, spoke with a lot of fair play about his counterpart from PSG, the Brazilian Marquinhos (32 years old).
PSG beat Arsenal in the Champions League final and won the second trophy in a row. In the last act in Budapest, the table read 1-1 at the end of regular time. The score remained even after the two extra periods.
The difference was made by the two penalty kicks missed by Gabriel and Eze. The two “gunners” did not hit the goal and sent the trophy to Paris. Captain Martin Odegaard is with them.
Martin Odegaard: “Marquinhos is a gentleman”
“Everyone is disappointed at the moment. It's natural, we were so close to winning the trophy. It's hard to digest, but we know how hard we worked to be here and what results we got this season. We have to look at the big picture and take the good parts,” Odegaard said, according to Sky Sports.
The “gunners” captain was asked about the condition of the two teammates who missed the penalty shootout, Gabriel and Eze: “It's our job to lift them up. We know they've given everything for the team this season, now we have to be there for them. It's part of football, part of life. We'll make sure we're even better next year.”
The Norwegian also saw the image of Marquinhos going to console Gabriel: “Marquinhos is a gentleman, probably the most experienced footballer on the field in the final. He felt on his skin both postures, he lost a final, so he knows what we are going through now”.
Gabriel wanted to take the 5th penalty. I prepared this moment in training. Bukayo (Saka), Martin (Odegaard) and Kai (Havertz) were normally the penalty takers. But things change when you get to extra time, you have to adapt. However, I know their quality. Ebs (Eze) never misses training.
– Mikel Arteta, Arsenal coach
The three footballers mentioned by Mikel Arteta were replaced before the penalty kicks, due to fatigue. They successfully executed Gyokeres, Rice and Martinelli.
