The Finnish government announced on Thursday that it will ask the European Commission for additional funding of 16 million euros to strengthen aerial and maritime drone surveillance of its border with Russia and the Gulf of Finland, reports Spanish news agency EFE.

According to the government in Helsinki, these funds should be granted through the EU's Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI), a mechanism through which Finland has already received €133 million to improve its border surveillance capabilities.

The new funding requested from Brussels is to be earmarked for the purchase of unmanned surveillance systems resistant to Russian electronic interference that jams the GPS signal, a situation frequently encountered in border areas since the war in Ukraine began, Agerpres notes.

According to the Finnish government, continuous disruptions to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal near the border with Russia have diminished the effectiveness of existing surveillance systems.

As part of this effort, Finland has committed to actively share the experience gained in its monitoring actions with other EU states and the European agency Frontex.
