Sarkozy, who was head of state from 2007-12, was sentenced to five years in prison in a case involving alleged financing of his election campaign by Libya. Sarkozy was cleared of charges of corruption and concealing the misappropriation of public funds. However, he was found guilty of “criminal conspiracy”, which is a serious offense in France, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

First former president in prison

On October 21, he was sent to prison because the court ordered him to start serving his sentence immediately. At the same time, from that moment on he had the right to apply for release and his lawyers submitted such an application immediately.

Sarkozy is the first former French president to be imprisoned following a court verdict.
