The police in Hanau, a German city that was the scene of an armed attack by a right-wing extremist five years ago, arrested a Romanian man suspected of drawing swastikas on cars, mailboxes and walls using his own blood, informs the German news agency DPA.

The suspect, aged 31, was arrested while intoxicated in his apartment in Hanau (a city located 25 kilometers east of Frankfurt), following information given to the authorities by a witness, the police and prosecutors said, according to Agerpres.

Investigators believe the suspect's actions may be related to an incident in his professional environment. He was under psychiatric evaluation.

The suspect is being investigated for damaging property and using the symbols of unconstitutional organizations, which is a criminal offense in Germany.

A resident of Hanau reported Wednesday evening that he found a swastika drawn on the hood of his car.

Police officers later discovered nearly 50 cars painted with blood, many of them with Nazi symbols. The swastika, a symbol used by Adolf Hitler's Nazi party in the first half of the last century, is banned in Germany.

The discovery caused consternation in Hanau, where the memory of the attack on February 19, 2020 is still vivid. In that incident, a 43-year-old German attacked youths with migrant backgrounds at a shisha bar, killing nine of them before killing his own mother and killing himself.
