Just this morning, Mircea Lucescu complained of serious health problems, being urgently transported to the Bucharest University Hospital, where he is undergoing several investigations.
“He was talking to the players and he got sick. He stopped his speech, sat on a chair and stopped reacting. We don't know what we will do. We are also shocked by the situation”, federal sources told GSP.ro, in the minutes immediately following the incident.
Jerry Gane and Florin Constantinovici will lead Romania in Slovakia
Romania has to play a friendly in Bratislava, against Slovakia, on March 31, from 21:45. The departure takes place today, at 18:00, and the chances that the selector will accompany the team are zero at this moment, because he will remain hospitalized in the Bucharest Emergency University Hospital for monitoring and specialized treatment.
Thus, the FRF must quickly find a replacement for the friendly. And this will be Ionel Gane, one of Lucescu's seconds. Jerry has a PRO license and knows the players of the national team, having been with the first national team since February 2022. He is in his second term, after the one from 2017-2019, when Cosmin Contra was the coach.
Gane will be helped in this match by Florin Constantinovici, Mircea Lucescu's second assistant. The two were also the ones who finished today's training session, after the selector got sick. Mihai Stoichiță will also be part of the delegation that will go to Slovakia, but the technical director of the FRF will not be involved in the preparation of the match.
