One worker was taken to hospital with serious injuries and another was trapped under rubble after a medieval tower under renovation partially collapsed in central Rome near the Colosseum on Monday, Reuters reports.

The spokesman of the national fire department, Luca Cari, told Reuters that the intervention teams were trying to extract the worker trapped under the rubble.

“We are trying to get him out alive, but the situation is complex because of the risk of further collapses,” the fire department representative said of the ongoing rescue efforts.

The president of the Lazio region (in the center of the country, which includes the capital Rome) told Italian news agencies that the hospitalized worker was not in critical condition and that two other workers suffered minor injuries but refused to be taken to hospital.

The Torre dei Conti, with a height of 29 meters, is located on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, the wide thoroughfare that connects Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum.

The building has not been used since 2006, but was undergoing renovations as part of a four-year restoration project that was due to be completed next year, according to city officials.
