– I have no technique at all. I have terrible speed. Here you are not competing with the young David Popovici, but with some ladies who also come to the pool. I still swim with the gods and face them. The gods are those who swim very fast, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, everything.

– Who taught you the secrets of swimming?
– The need. You know how times were. They would leave you on the street and tell you: deal with it! And you had to manage. Here, on the Danube, they used to throw you into the water: deal with it! And you did it. We had the Borcea arm, I started swimming naturally, floating, which everyone was doing.

– And did you enjoy swimming?
– It's not really a pleasure for me, who is built anti-sport. I don't get up in the morning and can't wait to come to the pool. But I still come, because I have to. I also swam in the sea, the salt helps you there.

But I walk a lot. 15,000 steps per day. I go through life, where I have work to do. I come to swimming full of hate, because I don't necessarily like the movement, but as I swim – I get over it. I also like that this sport makes us all equal. Nobody is a light with that little thing on their head. I think I've also been cured of some allergies since being exposed to so much chlorine. Otherwise, know that I am fine, healthy. Nothing really hurt.

– One of my ankles still hurts. I have retired footballer's ankles, they are healthy, I have sprained my ankles, one or two. Otherwise, thank God, the health of the body characterizes me. It's from DNA. From both sides, from mother, from father.

– A century of loneliness…

– Apart from the gorgeousness? With age it's harder and harder to stay gorgeous, you know. I'm still hungry, not just sports. I abstain from cookies. I sit down in front of a confectionery and cry. If someone gives me candy, I eat it. I can't sleep with candy in the house. My sisters from Belgium (no – Maria has two younger sisters) brought me candies now, I don't even want to remember… Although I enjoyed them! I ate them all!

– I looked. I was boiling. I used to wake up at night when it was the world championship in America. Who did I like? I liked Zidane… And in general the footballers from the Italian national team.
