The new prime minister received a nomination a week ago from the president of Moldova, Maia Sandu. The head of state wished him to build a cabinet that “will meet the most important expectations of citizens: ensure peace, prepare the country for accession to the EU, strengthen the economy and raise people's standard of living.”

Munteanu, who holds Moldovan, Romanian and American citizenship, has not lived in the Republic of Moldova for almost two decades. This is a new figure in the country's politics. He is not a member of the ruling party, the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS).
A businessman with extensive experience in finance and economics, in the 1990s he worked at the National Bank of Moldova, and then at the World Bank and investment funds based in Ukraine.
Munteanu decided that he intended to focus on developing Moldova's economy after recent years of stagnation. He announced that the new cabinet would probably include many ministers from the previous government – the Europa Libera Romania website announced a week ago.
