Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals of the League Cup with excitement after 4-3 with Wolves. The Blues ended the match with 10 men, Liam Delap being sent off in the final minutes, much to the irritation of coach Enzo Maresca.
In Wolverhampton, against the bottom placed in the Premier League, Chelsea had fun in the first half. Andrey Santos scored after only 5 minutes, with a shot from the edge of the box after the visitors recovered up top.
Ten minutes later, 0-2: Tyrique George pushed the ball into the net after Gittens crossed in front of goal. The halftime score was 0-3 and it also came after a recovery near the opponent's box. Andrey Santos stole the ball from Fernando Lopez again Estevao he finished elegantly, lobbing Jose Sa.
After 3-0 at half-time, Chelsea trembled with Wolves
Vitor Pereira made two changes at half-time, and they paid off. Buonanotte lost the ball in the center, the hosts went on the counterattack and Arokodare ('48) was nearing completion.
It was 2-3 in the 73rd minute, when David Moller Wolfe scored from a tricky position. The evening seemed to take a dramatic turn for Chelsea in the 86th minute when Liam Delap lost his cool and tackled an opponent, receiving his second yellow, but Gittens quelled the home team's momentum with a super goal in '89: a goal from distance, with the outside!
The final score, 3-4, was established by the hosts, through the same Wolfe. Wolverhampton didn't have the strength to equalize, but the scare experienced at the end, especially in the context of Delap's elimination, irritated coach Enzo Maresca to the max. The Italian crushed Delap!
Enzo Maresca “camped” Liam Delap: “He plays for himself, he doesn't understand what is happening around him”
“I got a very stupid red card, completely unnecessary, it was a stupid foul that should have been avoided.
I completely understand red cards like the ones against Brighton and Manchester United, but the one with Nottingham Forest and the one today were to be avoided and should have been avoided.
It is embarrassing to receive such a red card, shameful. Two yellow cards in 7 minutes, both avoidable.
After the first one, I told him 4 or 5 times to keep calm, but when he's on the field he's probably playing for himself, it's hard for him to understand what's going on around him and don't listen to others”, Maresca “thundered”.
In the quarter-finals, Chelsea will play away to third division team Cardiff.
