The two suspects arrested in the spectacular theft of jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris have “partially” admitted their involvement in the robbery, Sky News and Reuters write.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed this information during a press conference held on Wednesday.
Four thieves stole nine items – one of which was dropped and recovered at the scene – in a heist committed while the famous Parisian museum was open to visitors on the morning of October 19.
Prosecutor Beccuau also said that the jewels have not been recovered until this moment.
She also referred to reports that police believe the robbery may have been an “inside” job.
Beccuau stated that “there is no evidence that the thieves benefited from help from the inside”.
Earlier on Wednesday, French police acknowledged major gaps in the Louvre Museum's security system.
Paris police chief Patrice Faure told lawmakers that outdated systems and slow repairs had left weak points.
“There has been no step forward technologically,” he said.
Faure also revealed that the Louvre Museum's authorization to use security cameras expired in July and that it had not been renewed.
