Spotify is betting on AI. And respect for copyright

Spotify announced cooperation with the world's largest music labels. Companies such as Sony, Universal and Warner are involved in the project, representing, among others: Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift. New solutions are to be created while respecting the rights of artists, who will not be forced to participate in the project.

According to “The Guardian”, Spotify announced the creation of a modern research laboratory for generative AI, which will develop innovative products for fans and artists. The company emphasizes that the new tools will generate additional revenue for creators, providing them with appropriate remuneration and recognition for their work. Cooperation with record labels is to ensure that copyrights are respected.
“Some voices in the tech industry believe copyright should be abolished. We don't think so. Musicians' rights matter. Copyright is essential. If the music industry doesn't lead at this point, AI-powered innovation will take place elsewhere, without rights, consent or compensation,” the company wrote in a statement quoted by The Guardian.

The music industry is already struggling with issues related to AI. Labels like Universal are suing startups Udio and Suno for alleged copyright infringement. An example of the controversy is the song “Heart on My Sleeve,” created by AI using voices resembling Drake and The Weeknd, which was removed from streaming platforms after Universal intervened.

The head of Universal Music Group, Sir Lucian Grainge, emphasized that any license for the use of artists' voices or songs by AI requires their consent. Sony Music Group president Rob Stringer stressed that there must be a “direct license” to the creators' work before new products are introduced. In turn, Robert Kyncl from Warner Music Group expressed his approval of Spotify's “thoughtful AI security measures”.
Spotify already uses AI to personalize playlists and create a personalized DJ. Collaboration with labels and independent companies such as Merlin and Believe aims to develop technology that will benefit both artists and fans.
