Nicuşor Dan claimed, on Monday night, that there is no danger that the Republic of Moldova would be attacked by Russia, specifying that as long as Ukraine resists, Moldova is not military threatened.
The president was asked, on Monday night, in an interview with Pro TV news, if Romania would intervene to defend their citizens from the Republic of Moldova under the conditions of a Russian attack.
“The Republic of Moldova has only two neighbors, Ukraine and Romania. Fortunately, Ukrainian resists, that is, Moldova cannot be accessed from this direction and even less from the direction of Romania, which is a NATO member country. So, as long as Ukraine resists, this danger does not exist,” said Nicuşor Dan.
However, the head of state considers that there was a danger of a Russian military reinforcement in Transnistria, if the elections in the Republic of Moldova had been won by the pro-Russian forces.
“If somehow they had won the pro-Russian forces, then they would have allowed a strengthening of the small armed forces of about 1,000 people who are now in Transnistria. But, Moldova, as long as Ukraine resists, has no threat,” said President Dan.
About the presence of US military in Romania
Nicușor Dan also said that he believes that the American role in Romania's security is an important one and that the US offers security guarantees to our country, through the military presence in Deveselu and Mihail Kogălniceanu.
Asked about the discussions about the possible withdrawal of the US military in Romania, the president said that Romania's interest is to have a continuity of the American presence.
“There are also advantages of American presence. Romania has a military base in Kogălniceanu, which is much closer to the Middle East area than other American military bases in Europe. We try to have a partnership that is mutually advantageous,” he added.
