This year, the German government plans to purchase over 600 Skyranger anti-aircraft systems for the Bundeswehr, Handelsblatt reported on Friday, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense in Berlin. These weapons are to be delivered by 2030.

The value of the contract is estimated at over nine billion euros. The German arms giant Rheinmetall and the French-German concern KNDS will be responsible for its implementation.

The Skyranger system, which is still under development, is considered a potentially effective weapon against drone swarms. It can be placed on an armored vehicle and has a high rate of fire (many shots in a short time).

Rheinmetall representatives claim that the company is ready to produce at least 200 Skyranger systems per year.

The head of the German concern, Armin Papperger, announced in September that his company will deliver new Skyranger anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine this year. The value of the contract with the Ukrainians is to be several hundred million euros, and the systems will be financed with income from Russian assets frozen in the EU.

Due to the increasing number of unregistered drone flights in Germany, including close to airports and military bases, the head of the German Interior Ministry, Alexander Dobrindt, wants to allow the Bundeswehr to shoot down suspicious drones. This will require major legal changes, probably even at the constitutional level. It is suspected that the Russians are behind the drone provocations.
