At least 36 people were killed and over 50 injured in a bus at an electoral rally by actor Vijay, in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, informs Reuters.

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, said that among the victims there are eight children and 16 women, who died in the Karur district, at an election rally of the Vijay formation, namely Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam.

Vijay, a star of the Cinematography Tamile in recent decades, has attracted great crowds at the demonstrations organized by the party it launched in 2024, opposition formation both to the DMK party, in Tamil Nadu and to the Bharatiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The actor was campaigning for the state elections to be held at the beginning of 2026.

Clips published by the Media Local show thousands of people around a campaign vehicle in which Vijay is seen talking. The actor threw bottles of water to the people who were about to faint and then asked for police help when the crowd became uncontrollable

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply sad,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on X.

At least 44 doctors from the neighboring districts Tiruchirappali and Salem were sent to Karr.

This is not the first time that Vijay's rallies have generated security concerns. At least six deaths were mentioned in the press after the first demonstration organized by his party after its launch in October last year.

Despite the restrictions imposed by the police, related to the size of the convoy and the location changes, the massive presence overwhelmed the local infrastructure.
