Russian leader Vladimir Putin informed on Monday that he was ready to agree to the extension by the year of the treaty on funds aimed at further reduction and limitation of strategic arms, if US President Donald Trump does the same – said Reuters.

The Treaty on the reduction of strategic arms, popularly called the new start, is a double -sided agreement concluded between the Russian Federation and the USA, which aims to reduce and limit strategic arms – nuclear heads and means of carrying them. It consists of 16 articles and obliges both countries to limit the number of their nuclear heads, arranged on transferring agents, up to 1550 pieces. Also, the number of transfer means was to be limited – to 800.
The name of the Treaty Nowy Start refers to the previous Start Treaty, concluded in 1991 by the USA and the USSR, which was in force in 1994-2009 (between the USA and Russia). Later proposed Treaties of Start II and Start III have never entered into force. The new start was replaced by the expansion of the Sort and the Sort system, which ceased to apply on the day of the New Start Commission came into force.
The contract was signed in 2010 and entered into force a year later. The new start would expire in 2021, but the parties agreed to a five -year extension. After this extension, the treaty is valid until February 5, 2026.
Putin informed about the desire to extend the new start by a year – provided that Trump did the same – during the Monday meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. – Russia is ready to continue to follow the central numerical limits resulting from the Nowy Start treaty, for a year after February 5, 2026 – said the Russian leader.
As Reuters pointed out, the Russian leader emphasized that he was ready for this movement in the “interest of global non -spreading nuclear weapons” and “to help revive the dialogue with Washington about the successor of this treaty.” – We believe that this remedy will only be functional if the United States takes similar actions and does not take steps that undermine or violate the existing balance (in terms of) the ability to deter – emphasized Putin.
