Aleksandar Vučić Acknowledges Election Defeat in Serbia

Aleksandar Vučić declared he won’t leave Serbia
In the Serbian elections held on October 25, Aleksandar Vučić announced that he has lost to the Student List, which secured between 135 to 140 mandates compared to his party’s approximately 105 mandates. Vučić’s list, titled “Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia,” was supported by the Serbian Progressive Party.
He estimated that the Student List received around 2.2 million votes, while his own garnered about 1.72 million. Despite the loss, Vučić emphasized that the Serbian Progressive Party will continue to fight and demonstrate what it means to be in opposition.
Vučić also addressed rumors regarding his potential departure from Serbia, asserting that such predictions were unfounded, according to reports from Serbian public broadcaster RTS. Meanwhile, the Student List headquarters celebrated as preliminary results were announced.
Notably, apart from minority parties, other political lists failed to surpass the electoral threshold. The Serbian Progressive Party had been in power since 2012, with Vučić serving as president since May 2017 after being re-elected in April 2022.
These parliamentary elections marked the fifth such event in Serbia over the last decade and occurred against the backdrop of over a year of widespread protests, which erupted following a tragic incident at a railway station that resulted in 16 fatalities. The protests were fueled by public accusations of government corruption and incompetence, sometimes drawing hundreds of thousands participants.
