Germany Pursues Thousands of Long-Range Missiles, Including Ukrainian Models

Germany is actively seeking to procure thousands of long-range missiles, including potential collaborations on Ukrainian-made models, according to reports.
Amid concerns regarding the delayed supply of American Tomahawk missiles and Typhon ground launch systems—whose delivery could be postponed for up to five years—the German Ministry of Defense is engaging with the U.S. defense startup Covenant. Discussions are centered on a contract valued at over €1 billion for thousands of ground-launched Anthem cruise missiles. Covenant recently established a factory in Leipzig, where they expect to produce the first missiles by early 2027. Sources indicate that these missiles will have a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers.
Negotiations are also ongoing regarding the joint production and procurement of the Ukrainian “Bars” missiles; however, the manufacturer has not been publicly disclosed.
Other potential suppliers include the Dutch company Destinus, which is developing the Ruta cruise missiles, and the German-British startup Hypersonica, which is working on the HS1 rocket.
As Bloomberg explains, acquiring a significant number of low-cost missiles aims to overwhelm enemy air defenses, thereby improving strike success against targets.
