A Ukrainian national has been detained in Brandenburg, Germany, on suspicions of espionage in favor of Russia, as confirmed by federal prosecutors in a statement released on Thursday, reported by Reuters.
Germany has intensified its efforts to counter what it describes as increasingly frequent hybrid attacks from Russia, which Chancellor Friedrich Merz considers the primary threat to national security.
According to an internal assessment, the German military has classified the threat of sabotage from Russia against its own troops and facilities as “significant”—the second-highest level out of four on the internal threat scale.
Targets of the Suspect
Prosecutors have publicly identified the suspect as Vadym Y., in accordance with German data protection laws, stating that he has been in contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025.
The suspect is alleged to have collected military-related information, including details about armored vehicle production, ammunition, explosives, as well as personnel and facilities involved in securing NATO’s eastern flank.
While some information was publicly available, other details were reportedly solicited from individuals within the European defense industry, according to prosecutors.
Germany’s Chancellor remarked on Thursday that the arrest did not surprise him and warned that similar cases are likely to arise in the future.
Western officials have been warning for months that Russia is engaging in sabotage operations, cyberattacks, and other hybrid tactics in Europe to undermine support for Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Merz stated that Russia’s disinformation and hybrid operations pose the greatest threat to Germany’s security, accusing Moscow of launching a broader challenge to the political order established after the Cold War.
The suspect is set to appear before a judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Germany on Friday, who will decide on preventive detention measures.
