Trump’s Behavior Toward Zelensky Deters Open Dialogue, Warns Advisors

Zelensky holds negotiations with Winkoff and Kushner in Norway

During discussions in Norway, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was cautioned by Jared Kushner and Avi Winkoff regarding his statements that have reportedly annoyed former President Donald Trump. The New York Times highlights that Trump’s approach to foreign leaders is clear: while he may critique them, retaliation can provoke his ire.

Reports indicate that when American officials expressed concerns about Zelensky’s comments, he occasionally refuted their claims, asserting he never made the statements in question. Nevertheless, during interactions with journalists, he sought to adopt a more measured tone and deliver positive assessments, as noted by Baker.

Baker observes that Trump’s combative nature has led many global leaders to hesitate in opposing him due to the potential for negative repercussions or even renewed sanctions, depending on his mood.

Trump is known to demand respect but seldom shows it to anyone except those who align with his desires, or to autocrats such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Speculation regarding Trump’s new strategy of rapprochement with Moscow has emerged, particularly in light of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections on November 3. However, sources from the NYT report that Winkoff and Kushner convincingly denied any correlation between Trump’s stance on Russia and domestic politics during their conversation with Zelensky.

Context

  • Relations between Ukraine and the U.S. have deteriorated, particularly following Zelensky’s refusal to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries and the diesel agreement between Trump and Putin. Zelensky has criticized Trump for these decisions, while Trump claimed dealing with Zelensky is more challenging than engaging with Putin.
  • On October 19, Trump remarked that “Russia behaves quite normally regarding Ukraine” and that it is “not doing much at all.”
  • Journalist Ostap Yarysh previously noted that MAGA conservatives are actively promoting the narrative that Zelensky is deliberately ordering attacks on Russian oil refineries to complicate Trump’s situation before the midterm elections.
