Tesla in Self-Driving Mode Collides with California Highway Patrol Car

A Tesla vehicle in self-driving mode collided with a California Highway Patrol car, injuring two officers, according to reports from ABC News.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Solano County when a 22-year-old driver from Sacramento crashed into the back of a police vehicle that was stationary on the highway in Fairfield.

The police had halted traffic in multiple lanes to respond to another incident, with the patrol car positioned in one of the closed lanes.

Driver Claims He Was Asleep

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Tesla driver disregarded warning lights, road markings, and safety devices set up at the scene.

Footage released by the police shows the vehicle speeding down the highway before violently striking the police car from behind.

The driver informed the officers that he had fallen asleep and was utilizing the vehicle’s driver assistance technology.

The two injured officers were taken to a hospital for medical attention but were later discharged. The Tesla driver reported no injuries.

The police emphasized that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature does not relieve the driver of the responsibility to operate the vehicle safely and remain attentive on the road.
