Trump Asserts No U.S. Attack on Iran Before Midterm Elections

Trump asserts the U.S. will not attack Iran before midterm elections

In a recent statement, former President Donald Trump declared that the United States will refrain from attacking Iran prior to the midterm elections scheduled for November 3. This comment surfaced against reports indicating that the Pentagon has tasked U.S. Central Command to finalize preparations for a potential escalation of military action against Iran.

Trump emphasized that Washington is engaged in “productive” negotiations with Tehran, despite ongoing tensions.

“I want to make it clear to everyone: although Iran is in a very bad position economically and militarily, and the blockade will remain in full effect, we will not attack Iran at any time before the midterm elections in the United States on November 3,” Trump stated.

Background Context

The active phase of hostilities between the U.S. and Iran began on February 28 of this year, when the U.S. and Israel conducted airstrikes in Iran, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

On April 12, Trump announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by U.S. naval forces. By May 28, the U.S. and Iran reached a 60-day ceasefire agreement and initiated discussions regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. On June 1, Trump announced he had complied with Iran’s condition for ending hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

On June 18, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding intended to conclude the conflict. However, after renewed exchanges of fire, Trump declared the ceasefire null on July 8. Since then, both nations have been in negotiations.

On September 16, reports surfaced claiming Iran had offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. eased military pressure and lifted the blockade on Iranian ports, a proposal Trump rejected, according to Axios.
