Marius Baciu Compares Octavian Popescu to Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal

Marius Baciu, a former coach at FCSB, has spoken highly of Octavian Popescu, 23, drawing comparisons to Lamine Yamal, 19, the star of Barcelona. Popescu recently took a temporary leave from FCSB following a mixed start to the season.

During his time with the roș-albaștri, Popescu played in 8 matches, scoring one goal and providing four assists, before being loaned to Greece’s Levadiakos, coached by Elias Charalambous, a former FCSB manager.

Baciu: “I See Little Difference Between Yamal and Popescu”

Baciu expressed confidence in Popescu’s abilities, suggesting that the main issue the player faces is a lack of confidence and the pressure he feels. “Tavi Popescu is a boy who has touched my heart, a really good, sensitive kid. I believe that this burden of responsibility has led him to insecurity and doubt,” Baciu commented.

He added, “I don’t think we have anyone in Romania with his talent in the last 30 meters. He tries too much, especially in midfield, and makes mistakes. If he focuses more on minimizing errors, I honestly see little difference, in terms of profile, between him and Yamal. A player cannot afford to make mistakes in the final third.” Baciu made these remarks during the “Fotbal Show” on Prima Sport.

According to Baciu, Popescu requires a more patient environment to thrive, away from excessive pressure. “There was no patience left for him, but not from us at the Palace (referring to Gigi Becali). I think he needs a lot more patience. He is a player who should be supported, allowed to flourish in his own way in the final third. It’s good for him to have left, to calm down and step away from this environment,” he stated.

“Return and Prove You’re the Best Player in Romania”

Baciu noted that Popescu impressed during training camp and was even considered for the national team. “I regret that Pintilii left. I hope he can clear his head, return, and prove he’s the best player in Romania. In training camp, he was our best player, one of the best. The way he trained and prepared, I thought there was no way he wouldn’t be on the national team,” Baciu added.
