Rubio Calls on Russia to Share Information on Plague Strain Leak

Rubio: Russia must share more information with the world

In light of growing concerns about a potential plague outbreak, Senator Marco Rubio highlighted the importance of transparency from Russian authorities. He recalled the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, “When you hear that someone has contracted a disease in a laboratory, it certainly raises alarms.”

Rubio remarked, “It would be irresponsible for me to sit here and make assumptions since we simply do not have all the information yet. I believe Russia is obviously obligated to share more information with the world. That is what they should do and what we hope they will do. The more we learn about what has occurred, the better we can all respond to the situation. Perhaps there is nothing there, or it could be more serious than we think. We do not know,” he added.

He refrained from speculating about the situation in Irkutsk, Russia, but emphasized that the United States is monitoring developments closely. “In my view, the entire world is watching very carefully. Depending on what we learn, we will understand how to react. We have already taken steps to be ready to respond if this turns out to be something more serious than currently acknowledged,” Rubio stated.

Context

  • In early October, it was reported that the Central District Hospital in Shelekhov, Irkutsk Oblast, was placed under quarantine after a patient, 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, died from a suspected plague infection. Shipilova was a researcher at a plague control institute in the region. It was reported that she may have accidentally broken a test tube containing the plague bacteria and concealed it. She was hospitalized on September 29 and died overnight from October 1 to 2.
  • Officially, Russian authorities have not confirmed the plague theory regarding her death, stating that she was diagnosed with “pneumonia of undetermined etiology,” while Western media suggest that the scale of the issue is being downplayed.
  • US President Donald Trump stated on October 5 that the United States is closely monitoring the situation and expressed readiness to assist Russia.
