Harvey Weinstein, once a prominent Hollywood producer, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York for sexually assaulting a former production assistant. This ruling, delivered on a Wednesday, comes after a lengthy judicial process spanning eight years, as reported by AFP.
In June, the Manhattan District Attorney expressed intentions to seek a 20-year sentence for Weinstein, facing a maximum penalty of 25 years for the charges he was convicted of.
This latest conviction arrives nearly a decade after the emergence of the #MeToo movement, which was catalyzed by the Weinstein scandal, notes Agerpres.
Weinstein, now 74 years old and a founder of Miramax, was initially found guilty in 2018 in New York. In 2020, he received a 23-year sentence for sexual assault against Miriam Haley in 2006 and for raping actress Jessica Mann in 2013.
However, an appeals court vacated that conviction in 2024 due to procedural issues, leading to new trials. In June 2025, he was again convicted for the sexual assault of Haley.
“I am not a violent man; show some leniency,” Weinstein pleaded, as he now navigates life in a wheelchair due to health problems, prior to Judge Curtis Farber announcing the sentence. He also expressed, “I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have harmed.”
In court, Haley stated that she is already serving a “life sentence” due to the trauma inflicted by the assault.
Weinstein continues to deny all allegations against him, claiming that any sexual interactions were consensual.
In June 2025, the producer of films such as “Pulp Fiction” and “Shakespeare in Love” was again found guilty concerning Haley’s case but was acquitted of similar allegations by Polish model Kaja Sokola in the same year.
California Sentencing Update
Jurors could not reach a consensus on the charges brought by Jessica Mann during the third trial in May 2026, prompting the U.S. Prosecutor’s Office to drop the case in agreement with Mann.
In a separate legal proceeding in California, an appeals court ordered a reevaluation of the 16-year sentence that Weinstein is serving for the rape of model and actress Evgeniya Chernyshova in Los Angeles in 2013. However, the court upheld his conviction in that case.
Given his advanced age and the severity of the sentences, whether served concurrently or consecutively, Harvey Weinstein is likely to spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
