NATO officials have admitted that the West is struggling to keep pace with Ukraine’s urgent military requirements. Norway is currently conducting Operation Legio at its Jomsborg base in Eastern Poland, where Ukrainian soldiers receive training and share their combat experiences with NATO forces.
Major John, an officer in charge of coordinating the drills, highlighted that Ukraine urgently needs training and equipment, while Western processes are not accustomed to such speed. He stated that the West is used to lengthy planning horizons, whereas Ukraine needs immediate results.
Brigadier General Atle Molde, commander of Task Force Legio, remarked that it is evident that Western peacetime operations would not be effective in combat situations. He cited the example of drone updates, explaining that in a Western country, this process can take six months, while in Ukraine, engineers close to the front can update equipment every few days or weeks to meet real conditions.
Molde also called for greater autonomy for military engineers and legislative changes that would allow for quicker innovation implementation. “If army engineers are given money, resources, and no restrictions, they can perform miracles,” he said.
The Jomsborg base itself exemplifies this approach, having been constructed in the woods within a few months, with its training infrastructure continuously modified based on the experiences of Ukrainian forces.
The media recalled that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged the elimination of bureaucratic red tape in military procurement and cross-border regulation back in July.
