Former President Donald Trump stated that the Iranian people, following their recent defeats, are eager to reach an agreement with the United States. He emphasized that the negotiations should happen “quickly and very strongly,” adding that he would assess whether the U.S. will participate in such discussions.
As of now, there have been no official comments from Iranian officials regarding their willingness to negotiate with the U.S.
Background
- The active phase of the conflict between Iran and the U.S. began on February 28 of this year, when U.S. and Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in Iran, resulting in the death of several high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
- On April 12, Trump announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by U.S. naval forces. By May 28, the U.S. and Iran had reached a 60-day ceasefire memorandum to begin discussions about Tehran’s nuclear program. Trump reported on June 1 that he had fulfilled Iran’s conditions to cease hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.
- In the early hours of June 18, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war. The following day, CENTCOM confirmed the official lifting of the blockade on Iranian ports as stipulated in the agreement. However, subsequent exchanges of strikes led Trump to declare on July 8 that the ceasefire was over.
- Since then, negotiations have been ongoing, with Pakistan acting as a mediator. However, public statements from U.S. and Iranian leaders do not indicate significant progress towards an agreement.
