President Donald Trump revealed on Friday that he is sending his envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, to Moscow and Kiev with a proposal aimed at concluding the ongoing war in Ukraine, as reported by AFP.
“They are bringing a proposal to end the war,” Trump told reporters regarding the weekend visit of his son-in-law, Kushner, and Witkoff.
While Trump did not clarify whether the plan involves any territorial concessions from Ukraine, he stated, “We have an idea for peace.” This marks the first visit for Kushner and Witkoff to Kiev, although both have previously traveled to Moscow.
“I have sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They have done a great job, and I sent them there to see if we can reach an agreement or not. And there are good chances that we will succeed,” he added.
Zelensky Proposes Ceasefire Amid U.S. Envoys’ Visit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a ceasefire during the visit of the two American envoys in Kiev and Moscow. “There will be no airstrikes from our side, and Russia must also ensure a ceasefire—no airstrikes on their part—throughout the duration of these discussions,” Zelensky stated in his evening address.
On Friday, Ukraine accused Russia of escalating tensions by striking the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) headquarters with a drone, injuring five people, according to Ukrainian officials. This attack occurred a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on peace prospects.
“Ultimately, the issue must be resolved by the countries involved in the conflict—Russia and Ukraine,” Putin remarked on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Trump: “Putin Not Looking to Attack NATO Territory”
The American president downplayed Germany’s decision to officially hold Russia accountable for a failed drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month. “I talk to him. I know him very well. Putin is not looking to attack NATO territory,” Trump stated in the Oval Office when asked by an AFP reporter about the German accusations.
On Tuesday, the German Minister of the Interior declared that Berlin considers Russia responsible for a “hybrid attack” involving an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig Airport, a key base for the German military, NATO, and logistical support for Ukraine.
