Estonia has come under scrutiny for a controversial €70 million advance payment made to Indian firms for ammunition that has yet to be delivered. This situation has prompted Brussels to engage with Estonian authorities to determine if this case qualifies for reimbursement procedures.
According to a spokesperson, the European Commission is closely monitoring the issue, emphasizing the need to ensure proper use of taxpayer money. “We are currently in contact with the Estonian authorities to investigate this matter in detail,” stated the spokesperson, Wigand.
In a related development, Estonia’s Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur announced his resignation on September 2, taking political responsibility for the transaction mishaps, despite these agreements being handled by subordinate structures, including the State Defense Investment Center. In his resignation address, Pevkur highlighted that under his leadership, Estonia’s defense capabilities have significantly improved. He urged continued strengthening of the national military and unwavering support for Ukraine, citing that the security of Ukraine directly impacts Estonia’s own safety.
