Norwegian King Harald’s Health Deteriorates; Family Called to His Side

The health of King Harald of Norway, the oldest monarch in Europe, has significantly worsened during his hospitalization, with the Royal Court announcing on Thursday that his condition is now “very serious.” The 89-year-old king has served as the ceremonial head of state since 1991 and became the continent’s oldest monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
King Harald was admitted to the hospital on August 17 for treatment of a blood infection. Despite receiving antibiotics, his health has deteriorated over the following days.
The Royal Palace has confirmed that Queen Sonja, Harald’s wife, as well as Crown Prince Haakon, have canceled all scheduled engagements. Reports from Norwegian media indicate that family members, including the Crown Prince and the Queen, have been seen arriving at Oslo University Hospital, where King Harald is currently receiving care.
Norwegian Officials Return Home Amid King’s Health Situation
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere expressed the nation’s support, stating, “The entire nation is with us as we send our warm thoughts to the king and the royal family.”
Masud Gharahkhani, the President of the Norwegian Parliament, has cut short an official visit to Iceland to return to Norway. Meanwhile, members of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee have also decided to return from their trip to South Korea.
The Bishops’ College of the Church of Norway, currently in Rome for a rare visit with the Pope, announced they will return home as soon as possible, according to Norwegian media reports.
Earlier this year, King Harald indicated plans to reduce his official duties due to his age, but he ruled out the possibility of abdication, affirming that his oath as king is for life.
