Leon Marchand, a 24-year-old swimmer from France, has secured his second gold medal in two days at the European Swimming Championships. He triumphed in the 400-meter freestyle final, marking his first participation in this event at a major competition.
On Saturday evening, Marchand clinched his first European gold in an individual event with a victory in the 200-meter butterfly.
Marchand Shines Again with 400-Meter Freestyle Gold
Just a day later, he added another gold to his impressive collection by winning the 400-meter freestyle final, finishing with a time of 3:43.14 minutes. Hungarian Oliver Papai took second place with a time of 3:44.46, while Germany’s Lukas Martens secured the bronze with 3:44.57.
Marchand’s winning time not only secured him the gold but also set a new national record for France in this event, an impressive feat in his first major competition at the distance.
Before the heats, Marchand displayed a humble attitude, stating, “I will try to reach the final. It is already a big challenge for me, being my first time competing in the 400 meters freestyle at an international event. We’ll see what happens.” What happened was a brilliant gold medal performance!
