U.S. Senators demand an explanation regarding sanctions against Russia
U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Christopher Coons have sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent requesting clarification on the lack of new sanctions against Russia.
The senators assert that the Trump administration has not imposed any new restrictions in the past 17 months.
The last significant sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil were enacted back in October 2025. Warren and Coons argue that these sanctions were viewed as a one-time measure and that Russia has been able to circumvent them.
Additionally, the letter cited Bessent’s earlier comments in February, which indicated that the pause in sanctions was due to the anticipation of outcomes from peace negotiations. They also referenced Rubio’s remarks in May that the negotiations had “not been fruitful.”
The senators demand a response from the officials by August 28, questioning: “If the administration halted regular sanctions against Russia due to peace talks that stalled months ago, why has it not resumed the regular and frequent application of U.S. sanctions to restore leverage for achieving a just peace in Ukraine?”
The letter further noted that between February 2022 and January 2025, when Trump was set to begin his second term, a total of 111 sanction packages were imposed on Russia.

- In August, the Senate approved a new sanctions bill targeting Russia, but its future in the House of Representatives remains uncertain, according to Reuters. Both Democrats and some Republicans express concerns that it could grant Trump new powers to impose tariffs on goods from U.S. allies, including Japan and several European nations.
