Polish authorities have detained a Russian national who was allegedly recruited by Moscow to assassinate a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw, as stated by Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Thursday.
Tusk revealed to reporters that the suspect was apprehended on August 7 and was tasked with killing an individual described as “inconvenient to the Putin regime.”
The Russian Embassy in Warsaw has not yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters. Moscow has consistently dismissed accusations from European powers, asserting that the West fosters an atmosphere of anti-Russian paranoia.
“Thanks to the truly brilliant actions of our services (…), we have detained a Russian citizen recruited by Russian intelligence,” Tusk remarked.
“We Managed to Prevent This Execution at the Last Moment”
The individual was hired to kill someone holding both Ukrainian and American passports, Tusk noted, without providing further details about the victim’s identity.
“At the last moment, thanks to the actions of the Internal Security Agency and the police, we managed to prevent this execution, this attack,” he added.
In June, a Russian artist critical of President Vladimir Putin was shot dead in the eastern Polish town of Biala Podlaska, according to prosecutors.
Poland claims that its role as a hub for supporting Ukraine has made it a target for Russian espionage and attacks.
