The financial predicament at CFR Cluj has escalated significantly. Club associates are urging Ioan Varga to file for insolvency, a move he has hesitated to make but is increasingly leaning towards as financial pressures mount.
The team is grappling with significant financial issues, including debts and overdue payments to players. Following a disappointing 0-5 defeat to Tromso, CFR Cluj’s chances of qualifying for the Conference League have evaporated, compelling the club to consider selling players. However, the funds generated may not be sufficient to alleviate the financial distress, prompting renewed discussions of insolvency for a potential restructuring and debt relief.
This would mark the second instance of insolvency in the club’s history, the first occurring between 2015 and 2017. Such a scenario would prevent the team from competing in European competitions for several years until the insolvency process concludes.
Club Members Fear the Worst
In the wake of the Tromso match, various discussions took place within the club. It was decided to terminate the contract of Antonio Folha and to release four of the five players brought in during the summer transfer window. Financial troubles were a prominent topic, with Varga being approached again about the prospect of insolvency. While he has previously rejected the idea outright, he appears more inclined to consider it now, especially in light of the lack of alternative solutions.
The atmosphere at the club is increasingly strained. One insider noted, “If the necessary funds do not arrive soon, CFR Cluj will no longer exist! The situation is complicated. Insolvency and drastic cost reductions are necessary,” highlighting the urgent need for intervention.
While the front office struggles with these challenges, the locker room situation is even more precarious. Players are expressing growing discontent over the club’s financial instability and the delayed payment of salaries.
