Bulgarian defense officials are investigating a drone explosion that may involve a type known as Maya, commonly used by the Ukrainian armed forces. However, they emphasized that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the incident was intentional.
The drone fell into a sunflower field approximately 100 meters from the Romanian border, close to the former Kardam crossing point. It is about one kilometer away from the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline compressor station.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that neither Bulgarian nor Romanian surveillance systems detected the drone, noting that small drones are challenging to spot, particularly at low altitudes. Radev also reported that the drone contained a significant amount of explosives, yet there were no injuries or damage to buildings or infrastructure as a result of the explosion.
Following the incident, Bulgaria has heightened security measures in the area, deploying additional air defense assets, including Cougar helicopters, Su-25 aircraft, and radar stations.
Radev announced that the incident will be discussed at the next North Atlantic Council meeting, with Bulgaria prepared to provide allies with updated information regarding the drone situation.
